Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller subsidiary Kia Motors ranked fourth in the world for green vehicle sales.

Affiliate automakers sold a total of 73,746 eco-friendly cars last year, including 64,533 hybrids, 8,712 electric vehicles, 256 fuel cell vehicles and 245 plug-in hybrids. These sales are at an all time high.

With these record numbers, the two automakers took fourth place in the world for green car sales, followed by Japan’s Toyota in first place with 987,000 units sold, Honda in second place with 217,000 units and Renault-Nissan with 74,000 cars. The Korean car brands even outperformed the American Ford Motor Co.

Hyundai and Kia green car sales have increased year on year. Around 30,600 units were sold in 2011, more than 63,000 in 2012 and more than 64,000 in 2013.

The professional service company KPMG International also forecast the future growth potential of automobile manufacturers on the world market. On January 18, Hyundai and Kia predicted possibly fourth place in the world market.
