South Korean tech giant, Samsung Electronics on Tuesday announced to become the world’s first company to develop next-generation mobile DRAM LPDDR5X (Low Power Double Data Rate 5X).
According to the company, the latest DRAM LPDDR5X sized 14-nanometer with 16-gigabit comes with enhanced speed, storage along with less power consumption. The product is expected to become the optimal memory chip solution for the advanced technology industry that is growing exponentially.
The latest next-generation mobile DRAM is designed to significantly boost speed, capacity and power savings for future 5G applications, artificial intelligence and the latest shift to metaverse.
Earlier in 2018, the company had delivered the industry’s first 8GB LPDDR5 DRAM and today, it is aggressively moving beyond mobile markets with the first 16GB LPDDR5X DRAM.
The new product processes up to 8.5 gigabits per second, which is about 30 percent faster than the previous LPDDR5 solution, which had a maximum data processing speed of 6.4 gigabits per second.
The new DRAM compared to the previous model also reduces consumption of power by 20 percent, thus leveraging the industry’s most advanced 14-nanometer DRAM process technology.
According to Samsung Electronics, it plans to actively respond to growing demand for higher-capacity mobile DRAM with 16-gigabyte LPDDR5X modules, enabling up to 64 gigabytes per memory package.
Senior vice president and head of the DRAM design team at Samsung Electronics, Hwang Sang-joon commented that in recent years, hyperconnected market segments such as AI, augmented reality and the metaverse, which rely on extremely fast large-scale data processing, have been rapidly expanding.
And the company’s latest LPDDR5X will broaden the use of high-performance, low-power memory beyond smartphones and bring new capabilities to AI-based edge applications.
The company also mentioned to continue to expand its advanced DRAM lineup and comie up with enhanced power consumption and performance that can accommodate demand for premium DRAM. It also plans to start mass producing LPDDR5X DRAM next year.
Samsung with its LPDDR5X serving as a key part of that foundation, later this year will also begin collaborating with global chipset manufacturers to establish a more viable framework for the expanding world of digital reality.
