South Korea’s top search engine company, Naver has laid out its strategies to enter the global market with its latest metaverse technology.

According to Seok Sang-ok, CEO of Naver Labs, they have recently joined hands with SoftBank to make an HD map of cities in Japan through its ALIKE solution. Next year, the company will also enter into a trilateral partnership with Naver Cloud and SoftBank to launch a full-scale mapping project of cities in Japan.

ALIKE is a key technology of Arcverse, which is Naver’s very own metaverse ecosystem. The technology is used in making realistic and accurate maps using 3D modeling. It makes a virtual map that is required to create a digital twin, a virtual model accurately reflecting a physical object.

The search engine has expressed its high hopes for the technology to be used in developing autonomous driving systems. This is because the company is confident on its artificial intelligence robots that have the ability to recommend an optimal route or speed by analyzing traffic and road conditions.

The team leader of an autonomous driving group at Naver Labs, Baek Jong-yoon, SoftBank has been aware of the importance of HD mapping. However, it had hard time earlier to find the right technology that can carry out a large-scale mapping.

Naver believes SoftBank chose to collaborate with them as it has a premium technology that can make fast and accurate maps of large cities.

It uses 3D modeling, as HD maps are cost-efficient and only need partial revisions instead of making a whole new map from scratch. The company believes that starting with Japan, it will further step out into other global markets.

According to Naver, it has recently completed an HD map of Gangnam after carrying out a 3D modeling project of the city last year. While it also received permission from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for autonomous driving within the country.

Lastly, Seok mentioned that the one and only purpose of Arcverse is to transform our living spaces to service platforms. And with key technologies of Arcverse, they will bring a better future for our clients.
