South Korean tech company, LG Group’s AI research hub LG AI Research showcased its new “ultra-large” artificial intelligence language model EXAONE on Tuesday. The latest development boasts more parameters than any other similar models created by its rivals in the home country.

About “EXAONE”

• The AI model refers to “expert AI for everyone”.
• It has around 300 billion different parameters or variables that it can tune in.
• The AI model due to its large capacity has a better capacity to process data more efficiently and also perform more advanced language skills.
• Its unique feature is that it has been trained to perform both in Korean and English.
• And compared to its US or Korean rivals that have a specialty in one specific language, the dual language system has the potential for wider adoption.
• Launched last year, the LG Center has been training EXAONE to curate, consume and interpret massive datasets.
• It has helped the AI software to reach a “human-like” language performance, being equipped with a more advanced natural language processing.

Tech firms around the world have been putting in efforts and resources into building their own extremely large AI language systems as most human knowledge is encoded in language.

According to LG, it is aiming to develop EXAONE as a top 1 percent AI expert that can be used in almost all sectors such as finance, research, education, and manufacturing.

LG center has set up a three-phase long-term plan: testing in collaboration with LG affiliates, creating a global AI alliance, and building an ecosystem for mass-market application in order to utilize and better the AI model.

Currently, the AI model has already been adopted by the group’s key units LG Chem, LG Electronics, LG CNS, and LG Uplus for uses like discovering a new material by analyzing complex chemicals research papers published over the past 100 years or developing a more fluent chatbot.

Bae Kyung-hoon, chief of LG’s AI research hub commented that they ultimately aim to play a role in building a global AI alliance where many schools, experts, and companies around the world team up to solve difficult challenges across industries.
