South Korean, 20 year old figure skater, Cha Jun-hwan wins the final national team trials in the country for the upcoming Beijing Olympics, hence securing a spot for the same.

According to reports, Cha won the men’s singles event in the second leg of the two-stage trials held for the Olympics in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province. In Sunday’s free skate he scored 185.00 points and 98.31 points in Saturday’s short program, finishing overall with 283.31 points.

In December he had also won the first leg of the trials with 239.16 points and had combined 522.47 points.

Another male figure skater, Lee Si-hyeong secured the second and last spot to Beijing overall. He scored 477.85 points combined points after the two trials events.

In the women’s singles, You Young was able to secure her first trip to the Olympics after winning the trials with a combined 430.08 points.

You, had won the second leg with 221.49 points overall on Sunday. She got 76.55 points in short program and 144.94 points in free skate. In 2020, she was the silver medallist for the Four Continents skating event.

Another, Kim Ye-lim secured the other Beijing-bound ticket and her first with 413.46 points in two trials events. In the second leg she finished second with 207.64 points.

Cha is the country’s only third male singles figure skater to compete in consecutive Winter Olympics. Four years ago at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics he finished in 15th place.

On Sunday in his free skate he had reportedly landed a quadruple toe loop and a quadruple salchow early. This is the first time all season that he successfully executed two quadruple jumps in one program.

He is being coached by Canadian figure skating legend Brian Orser.
