Consumers expect more from their vehicles than ever before. Cars have become mobile offices, entertainment hubs, and essentially gadgets. Many drivers, especially the younger generation, are more interested in the in-vehicle interface than leather stitching or horsepower. They want vehicles that improve lives and support mobile applications that they can’t live without.

Automotive Human-Machine Interface (HMI) solutions are functions and components of automotive hardware and software applications that enable drivers and passengers to communicate with the vehicle and the outside world. These solutions include navigation system touchscreens, voice-assisted vehicle infotainment clusters, steering wheels, buttons, displays and driving assistance tools that enable people to understand in-vehicle technologies, drive vehicles safely, and feel comfortable and in control of themselves. – Driving becomes more widely available. In fact, autonomous vehicles and electric vehicles cannot achieve large-scale customer adoption unless OEMs do the right HMI development.

Audiences have incredibly high expectations, and car brands need to create HMIs that are good enough to compete with mobile devices. The best vehicle HMIs are user-centric. It cannot be made if neither the driver nor the passengers understand it. OEM Innovation and R&D teams do primary research in the field, but are intended to validate small-scale technology opportunities before production begins.

Most OEMs aren’t doing enough to understand their audience at scale when designing their HMI. Instead, they rely on the sometimes outdated market research and consumer sectors obtained indirectly from their marketing teams. But drivers have expectations and priorities that can actually surprise you. Others are most interested in streaming their favorite music, seamlessly connecting with productivity applications and voice assistants, or allowing their children to continue their long journeys. Others want human-machine interactions to be as safe and simple as possible without interruption or automation.

One of the things that makes HMI development difficult is the amount of variables that affect human-machine interaction. A growing number of car brands are using artificial intelligence (AI) to build interfaces that can adapt to a variety of factors, including destination, time of day, who is driving, whether the car is moving, idling or parked. Sensors are increasingly used in vehicles to improve driver and occupant comfort, for example by automatically adjusting based on body temperature and responding to alert levels perceived by the driver. You should also consider how to distract drivers so they can focus as car brands launch more connectivity, apps and features.
